In Memoriam
Remembering Paul Newman, 1925-2008
On September 26, we lost an American legend. While Paul Newman may have been best known for his Oscar-winning roles in such films as "The Hustler" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” many in the corporate community know him for his large heart, innovative business practices, and philanthropic work.

Ten years ago, Newman helped to found the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, a consortium of global CEOs in support of corporate giving. He believed that the power of business could help transform communities and people in need. Sixteen years earlier, Newman created Newman's Own, an innovative company that might have been the first to establish a cause campaign. One hundred percent of post-tax profits and royalties from the company are donated to charities across the world -- amounting to over $250 million in contributions to date!

Those donations help fund The Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, a series of 11 camps around the world first established in 1988 to give seriously ill young people the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors for up to 10 days for free.

Paul Newman contributed to changing the way Corporate America understands how it can impact the lives of children, women, families and schools. VolunteerMatch admires his strategic philanthropy and we are honored to partner with CECP in lifting up examples of companies who are making a difference in their communities. His life will inspire business and community leaders to creatively and effectively practice social responsibility.

Thanksgiving Volunteering
Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Now is a great time to remind your employees that there are many ways they can give thanks and volunteer in their community.

This year, Charles Schwab Foundation is sponsoring its national "Season of Giving" campaign. In each of its major corporate offices Schwab is using VolunteerMatch's "Featuring" tool to tag around twelve dozen strategic volunteer opportunities within the VolunteerMatch network as community partners and highlight them on the Schwab employee webpages.

Most of these activities are season-specific -- such as serving meals at local shelters or visiting senior centers.

As Nancy Rock of the Schwab Foundation said, "This is the time of year when many people are naturally thinking about community service. Our goal with this initiative is to make it easier than ever to find meaningful ways to volunteer. For many, this will be an introduction to the many, many opportunities available through VolunteerMatch. Of course, we hope that this leads to year-round volunteering."

For ideas on how to engage your employees in service activities this Thanksgiving, contact us at solutions@volunteermatch.org.
